Australian Winnington takes world gold in the 400 meters

Australian swimmer Elijah Winnington has convincingly won gold in the first final of the world swimming championship in Budapest.

The 22-year-old Gold Coast freestyler took the 400m crown in the opening final on Saturday to launch the mighty Aussie challenge in superb and slightly unexpected fashion.

Second fastest in the world this year, the Commonwealth relay gold medalist posted the best time of his life and the fastest time in the world this year, 3 minutes 41.22 seconds, to disperse the field at the Duna Arena in the Hungarian capital.

He finished a second and a half ahead of German Lukas Martens (3:42.85), who had started as the fastest in the field in 2022 form, with Brazilian Guilherme Costa taking third with 3:43.31.
