WASHINGTON — The U.S. Capitol Police said on Friday that officers arrested seven unauthorized people at a Congressional office building Thursday night and charged them with unlawful entry.
The people identified themselves as affiliated with CBS’ “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.
Another person familiar with the case provided the AP with a list of nine people detained by the Capitol Police. They include several producers, along with Robert Smigel, the voice behind Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.
The two people who spoke to the AP were unable to publicly discuss the details of the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The incident Thursday night followed the third public hearing by the House panel investigating the Capitol uprising on January 6, 2021.
The Capitol Police Department said they received a call around 8:30 p.m. about a malfunction at the Longworth House office building. “The building was closed to visitors and these individuals were determined to be part of a group ordered by the USCP to vacate the building earlier in the day.”
The USCP statement said the case “remains an active criminal investigation and may lead to additional criminal charges.” The Capitol Police Department, beyond standard practice, refused to give the names of the people who were arrested.
